Edathua Church, Kerala

The St. George Forane Church at Edathua is one of the major Christian pilgrim centers in Alappuzha district and comes under the Syro Malabar Church in India. The Church comes under the jurisdiction of the Syro-Malabar Metropolitan Archdiocese of Changanacherry. The Church is famous for the feast of St. George and during this time, people from different places that include Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana come to attend the feast and seek blessings.

The Edathua St. George Forane Church is a prominent Catholic Church in Kerala and is situated on the banks of a river, which is a branch of the Pamba river. It is situated 23 kilometers away from Alappuzha and 12 kilometers from Thiruvallay. Edathua Church was built almost 200 years ago (1810 AD) and the architecture of the Church is very much similar to that existed in Medieval Europe.

The annual feast of the St. George Forane Catholic church starts on 27 April with the hoisting of the flag and concludes on 7 May. The feast is locally known as “Edathua Perunnal” and the feast is considered as the time when the family members outside Edathua come and visit their relatives in the village. The devotees cook food in the Church premises and also take part in the ritual bathing in the river that is seen at the front of the Church premises.

During the annual feast, Edathua St. George Church gets heavily illuminated and there will be a grand firework towards the end of the day. People gather heavily during the days of the feast to enjoy the spiritual bliss and ambiance that prevails at the premises of the Church.
