Parumala Church, Kerala

Parumala Pally or Parumala St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Orthodox Syrian Church is one of the most important Christian churches in Kerala. The church is under the custodian of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and is one of the major Christian pilgrimage centers in Kerala. The Parumala Church is located near Mannar town of Pathanamthitta district and is near to the banks of River Pamba.

The village of Parumala is a small piece of land that is situated on the banks of River Pamba. A seminary and Azhippura was constructed in the area by Malankara Metropolitan Joseph Mar Dionysius on a piece of land that was donated by Arikupurathu Mathen Karnavar. The seminary was used to teach church customs of the orthodox church and also training in the Syriac language.

A small church in the name of St. Peter and St. Paul was rebuilt by Saint Gregorios in the year 1895. The church was the center of church administration for Saint Gregorios and he stayed there until he passed away in 1902.

The present Parumal Church was rebuilt in the year 2002 and was designed by world-famous architecture Charles Correa. The church structure is circular in nature with a diameter of 39 meters and can accommodate more than 2000 worshipers at a time.

Saint Gregorios was entombed at this church in 2002 and ever since the Parumala Church has become a major Christian pilgrim center in Kerala. People from different parts of the world visit the Church and the tomb so as to seek the blessings of the Saint.

The annual feast or Perunnal of Parumal Church is on November 2nd every year and this is the day when Saint Gregorios entered heavenly abode. Believers from different parts of India walk on foot to reach the tomb on this day and on these days, the church witnesses a huge gathering of believers.

The Parumala Church also has a major influence in the tourism industry of Kerala as people from different countries visit this Church to seek the blessings of Saint Gregorios and also to view the majestic architecture of the Church.
