Achankovil River, Kerala

Achankovil river is another river in Kerala that flows through the Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts of Kerala. The Achankocil river oringinates at the souther tip of the peninsula and it is formed as a result of the merging of three rivers such as:

  • Rishimala River
  • Pasukidamettu River
  • Ramakkalteri River

The district of Pathanamthitta in Kerala is mainly enriched by the Achankovil river and during its course, it merges with the Pamba River at Veeyapuram in Alappuzha district. The river gets its name from its catchment area, which is a reserved forest area along with a small village. The village is named as Achankovil village and it is not at all easily accessible and if you want to reach this village, you need to take some rough forest routes.

The banks of Achankovil river is very much fertile and there are a lot of townships on the banks of this river. One of the major township is the Pathanamthitta town, which is the district headquarters of Pathanamthitta district in Kerala.

Another major townshisp that is found on the banks of river Achankovil is Mavelikkara, which is located in Alappuzha district. Mavelikkara claims a rich heritage, historical and cultural background and has some of the well known temples under it.

The Achankovil river flows through some of the most religious places of interests such as:

Chettikulangara Devi Temple
Kandiyoor Mahadeva Temple
Achankovil Shastha Temple
Chamakkavu Devi Temple
Thazhoor Bhagavathy Kshetram
Thrippara Shiva Kshetram

There are a lot of small tourist attractions that are found by the side of river Achankovil river. Most of these places are not big tourist destinations and hence they are mainly good for small family vacation or picnic. You can see a lot of religious pilgrimage sites on the banks of the river and most of these are ancient temples.

In Edappon, you can see a wide variety of flora and fauna and this is one of the best place to visit near Achankovil river. Edappon is near Pandalam and attracts a lot of people who come here to enjoy the beauty and charm of the nature. Most of the travel attraction near Achankovil river are used as local picnic spots where you can enjoy some good time with your friends and family.
