Kabini River, Kerala

The Kabini river is also known as Kapila river and it is one of the most important tributaries of Cauvery river in South India. The Kabini river originates from the Wayanad district in Kerala and it is formed by the merging of the Panamaram River and the Mananthavady River. After the merging, the river then keeps flowing in the eastern direction until it joins the Cauvery river at Tirumakudalu Narasipura in the state of Karnataka.

The river forms the Kabini Reservoir near to the town of Sargur. The Kabini reservoir has a wealthy backwater resource that are highly rich in wildlife species in the summer season. During the summer season, the water level of the reservoir receeds and forms grassy meadows that are quite beautiful in appearance.

The Kabini Dam is build across the river with a lenght of 2248 feet and a gross storage capaciy of 19.52 tmcft. The Kabini Dam is built between the villages such as Bichanahalli and Bidarahalli and is almost 17 km away from Sargur town in Karnataka.

Tha Panamaram river also joins the Kabini river near Payyampally after flowing through Mananthavady town. After traveling for 2 kilometers, the Kabini river then form an island known as the Kuruva Island, which is one of the most popular travel destinations in Wayanad district.

The Kuruva Island spreads over an area of 520 acres and is known for its rich flora and fauna, that attracts a lot of tourists during the peak tourism season. After travelling for 20 km ,the Kabini river reaches the Kabini reservoir, which is situated near the Kerala-Karnataka border.

The Kalindi river also joins the Kabini river between the Kabini reservoir and the Kuruva Island. The Kalindi river basically starts from the Brahmagiri hills.

One of the major travel attractions of the Kabani river is its reservoir. Near the Kabani river, you will be able to see various wildlife animals such as Elephants, Indian Gaurs, Crocodiles, Otters and Deer. There are also various bird species such as peacocks, eagles and cormorants. For the travelers, there is an opportunity to get involved in a wildlife safari through an exciting boat ride over the river and its reservoir.

The Kabani is the only river in Kerala that flows towards Karnataka and has a lot of places worth visiting in both the states. The travelers from across the world visit the travel attractions near Kabani river to enjoy its stunning beauty and charming nature.
