Mahe River

Mahé River, which is also called as Mayyazhipuzha, is a river in South India that flows through Kerala and the coastal areas of Mahe in Puducherry. The Mahe river is also known as the “English channel of India” as it separated British ruled Thalassery and French ruled Mahe. The Mahe river originates in the hills of Wayanad that is situated in the Western Ghats and after its origin, the river travels a length of 54 KM, before joining the Arabian Sea at Mahe.

The Mahe river or Mayyazhipuzha passes through various villages such as Naripetta, Vanimel, Peruvankara, Iyyancode, Iringanoor, Tripangathur, Peringalam, Eramala, Edachery, Kacheri, Parakkadavu Kariyad, Olavilam, Kunnumakkara, Azhiyoor, and Mahé. Mahe town is one of the most important cities in India and the northern boundary of this vibrant town is defined by this river. Even though the influence on the economy of the villages that the Mahe river passes through is minimal, the river was heavily used for inland navigation and transportation of goods from the inner villages to Mahe in the earlier days.

The river has a lot of potentials when it comes to attracting the tourists, as it passes through some of the most enchanting villages. The beauty of these villages and their surrounding places are quite enough to give more tourism importance to Mayyazhipuzha. This river really has the potential to boost the travel activities in its surrounding areas due to the mind-blowing scenic places that it passes through.

The Government of Puducherry is also developing a Riverside Walkaway on the banks of Mahe river that extends till the nearby fishing harbour. This will really help in improving the tourism industry in this place, as the riverside walkaway will give a thrilling experience for the tourists. You will be able to get a good view of the surrounding along with some fresh air while you take a walk along the Riverside Walkaway of Mahe river.
