Muvattupuzha River, Kerala

The Muvattupuzha River is an important source of water that flows through the Ernakulam district in Kerala. The town Muvattupuzha is named after this river which is known for its calm nature.

The name Muvattupuzha literally means “Three Rivers” in Malayalam language. As with its name, the river is a combination of three rivers such as Kothamangalam river, Kaliyar river and Thodupuzha river.

The Kothamangalam river, Kaliyar river and Thodupuzha river joins together to form a single river and flows towards the Vaikom Lake, before ending up in the Arabian sea. The length of the Muvattupuzha river that starts from Muvattupuzha town is 121 kms in lenght and one of the major sources of water in these areas.

There is an old bridge over the river at Muvattupuzha town and the name of this bridge is Muvattupuzha bridge. The Muvattupuzha bridge is considered to be one of the first concrete bridges in India. In the earlier days, the goods were carried and transported through various water transport methods of this river.

There are various tourist places and attractions near the banks of Muvattupuzha river and one of the most famous is the Thommankuthu waterfalls near Thodupuzha. The river also has a dam built across it, so as to serve the irrigation purpose of the people living nearby.

The Muvattupuzha river is also facing issues such as water pollution, illegal sand mining and other relation problems. The Government authorities have also come up with certain plans to tackle this issue, but they are still far from achieving it.

There are a lot decent picnic or travel spots near the banks of Muvattupuzha river such as Thattekadu bird sanctuary, Muvattupuzha bridge, Thammanimattom hanging bride, Wonderla Amusement park, Check dam at Rakkad, Temples, Churches, Mosques, Thriveni sangamam, river-side park etc.

The presence of such vacation spots around the vicinity of Muvattupuzha river adds more importance to it, and the travelers coming to these places also enjoys having a dip in the river.
