Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary

Idukki is one of the most beautiful travel location in Kerala and is home to several major hill stations of Kerala that attracts travelers from across the world. The amazing cool climate add more charm to this hilly district of Kerala. The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is locate about 40 km from Thodupuzha in Idukki district.

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary Travel
A land-locked district, Idukki is one of the most nature rich areas of Kerala.The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is is blessed with thick dense forests and is almost about 77 sq kms of area in the Thodupuzha and Udumpanchola taluks of the district.

The wildlife sanctuary in Idukki is situated at an altitude of around 450-748 meters above the sea level, and occupies the forest land between the famous Cheruthoni  and the Periyar river. Around the sanctuary there is a scenic lake covered by a majestic canopy of tropical deciduous  and ever-green trees , and offers opportunity to enjoy boat rides. The Idukki wildlife sanctuary is situated near the famous Idukki Arch Dam and a visit to this sanctuary helps you to enjoy the panoramic beauty of this arch dam.

Elephants, bison, sambar deer, wild dogs, jungle cats, tiger, wild boar etc are seen here apart from various species of snakes including cobra, viper, kraits and numerous non-poisonous ones. Birds include jungle fowl, myna, laughing thrush, black bulbul, peafowl, woodpecker, kingfisher etc. The wildlife here is similar to that of Thekkady. This sanctuary lies adjacent to the world renowned Idukki Arch Dam.

When it comes to a traveler’s point of view the lake of Kizhakkilachimala and its surrounding forests are something that are worth viewing. The view of the Idukki dam and  the Cheruthoni dam  from Hill Valley Park is another irresistible point. If you are planning your travel to the Idukki wildlife sanctuary, make sure that you do not miss out on any opportunity to enjoy the scenic beauties that are available.

Accommodation at Idukki Willdlife Sanctuary
Unfortunately there are no accommodation facility close to the Idukki wildlife park and for an accommodation you need to travel upto Thodupuzha which is around 40 km away. When you make your travel trip to this wildlife sanctuary in Idukki, book your accommodation well in advance at Thodupuzha or even Kottayam or Changanacherri.

Best Time to Visit Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary
Even though this wildlife sanctuary can be visited throughout the year the months between June to September will experience heavy rainfalls and you might not be able to enjoy the beauty of this place to the fullest. During this season, it is better not to plan your travel to the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary. The best time to visit the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is between November to March when the conditions are more favorable for making your travel trip more enjoyable.

Nearest railway stations: The nearest railway station is at Kottayam which is  about 87 km away.

Nearest airports:  The nearest airport is the Kochi international airport, about 190 km away.
